Collage Art: Cutting the Guesswork
My artwork below accompanies a fine story written by someone else.
The portrait subject, Ellen Feldman, is doing mindblowing work in computer science. Her efforts may one day help people who’ve suffered spinal damage to walk again. The background builds on a computer simulation she created that predicts how a patient’s spinal cord will respond to voltage from an electrode array.
In surrounding the researcher with a vivid derivative of her work, I was attempting to convey the sense of heroism and wonder that learning about the project inspired in me. The point of focus at right highlights the areas of her mesh image that map to the structures of the spine. The color choices in the field of triangles behind were meant to play up the elegance of the shapes and hint at patterns beginning to emerge from something complex and a little chaotic.
I had a ton of fun with this. My collages are in a rather specific style and right now constitute sort of a tangent from the mainline of my work at Ronin Bard. But I'm happy with the results here—not always a feeling I come by easily—and grateful that I got the chance to take on a collage for a client.
